An iQonsulting report has forecast a third consecutive annual rise in Southern Hemisphere table grape exports in 2011-12, despite expected falls in Chile, Brazil and Argentina.

The 4.48% rise to 1.34 million metric tons (MT) is set to be driven by significant growth in Peru and South Africa, with expected jumps of 42.2% and 24.5% respectively.

The market researcher said Peru's expected growth to 150,170MT was due to new orchards coming into production, while South Africa's forecast rise to 250,000MT followed improved climatic conditions.

The Southern Hemisphere's largest table grape exporter Chile is set for a 3.3% fall to 821,000MT, following snow and low temperatures in the northern Atacama region that damaged early varieties.

IQonsulting estimates Argentina's table grape shipments will fall 5.3% to 65,000MT if weather conditions remain stable, while the largest drop in shipments is expected for Brazil with a 7.2% drop to 56,400MT.

The researcher attributed the Brazilian situation to higher production costs and an unfavorable exchange rate.
