The 20 kilometer tunnel that will transport water to the Olmos project

Brazilian infrastructure giant Odebrecht,  is completing work on a 43,500 hectare  irrigation and growing project that could generate a potential US$ 660 million in agricultural exports.

The project is based in Olmos,is located in the Lambayeque region in northern Peru.

According to a statement from the company, the project offers the growing land and an irrigation system that will bring water from the Huancamba River to the lots through a tunnel that will pass through the Andes mountain range. The tunnel is scheduled for completion in the first quarter of 2012 and is being delivered through the conglomerate's Peruvian subsidiary H2Olmos

The growing land is currently owned by the Lambayeque regional government, and will be auctioned off in February. The growing lots are between 500 and 1,000 hectares each, at a starting price of US$ 4,250 per hectare.

According to the H2Olmos, the project will bring into production an estimated US$ 660 million in agricultural exports.

Olmos is a subtropical, arid zone with little rainfall but a steady climate. The irrigation system will also be complemented with highways to the port of Paita, about 124 miles away, and the Chiclayo airport, about 71 miles away.

The project is being presented not only as an opportunity for foreign investors, but also a development project for the local community, with the potential to generate 40,000 jobs and stimulate other sectors of the local economy as well.
