Mexico's freeze not over yet
Mexico's has recorded its 32nd cold front and fourth winter storm this season, hitting the country's northeast with strong rains and winds over the weekend, reported Yucatan.com.mx.
The country's National Meteorology Service said the strong conditions took place in the states of Sonora and Baja California, the story reported. Farmers in the city of Culiacán were put on alert for an icy wave, with calls to the government for extraordinary support of US$619.7 millino (7.500 billion pesos) to avoid indebtedness as a result of frost damages.
Before the most recent frost the Mexican Protected Horticulture Association (AMHPAC) issued a release saying Mexico's horticultural industry was recovering quickly from the record freeze.
AMHPAC president Eric Viramontes said it would take a while for squash supplies to return to normal, while eggplant, cucumber and green bell pepper crops were in good supply.
"The protected vegetable industry is recovering nicely; one of the major advantages of the protected horticultural model is that there are 25 other States in Mexico that use this growing method and we can continue to supply the US Market."
