Peruvian unions call for the end of transgenics
Several Peruvian agricultural unions have criticized the government for allowing the production of transgenic food, RPP Noticias reported.
At the National Peruvian Agro Convention (CONVEAGRO), union leaders expressed their rejection of transgenics, demanding the government repeal laws surrounding the use of biotechnology, the story reported.
The Peruvian Consumers and Users Association (ASPEC) and the country's Medical Association also supported the unions.
CONVEAGRO vice president Jorge Prado called for the resignation of government ministers Rafael Quevedo (Agriculture), Ismael Benevides (Economy) and Antonio Brack (Environment), the story reported.
Prado told RPP Noticias Brack "had not assumed the corresponding responsibility of defending our small farming and our biodiversity, as befits the function".
