The U.S. Ambassador to Peru said it would be difficult to renegotiate a free trade agreement (FTA) between the two countries if President-elect Ollanta Humala chose to do so, website Gestion.pe reported.

Ambassador Rose Likins' comments came as a response to Humala's pledge he would use the mechanisms of the agreement to defend national interests, while also opening up the possibility of a revision.

She said the existing agreement benefited both countries but the U.S. Government would be open to answer any questions Humala put forth, the story reported.

"It is too soon to use the word renegotiation; it's a very formal term and in our case it would be quite difficult, but we obviously want to meet the concerns of our partner (Peru)," Likins was quoted as saying.

"We have to understand what the concerns are, but we have not had a direct conversation, and I can't say what the appropriate actions would be.

"Many producers, exporters of agro-industry, of the textile sector, many Peruvians, have benefited from this agreement and in the U.S. there are many Americans that have also gained work in exports through this agreement."
