Brazil: São Paulo orange crop to grow 27% in 2011
Orange production in the Brazilian state of São Paulo is expected to rise 27% year-on-year to 377 million cartons in 2011, website Revistagloborural.globo.com reported. 
The figures come from a survey by Brazil's National Supply Company (Conab), with the rise in expected harvesting attributed to improved technological techniques and the replacement of unproductive fields with new plantations, the story reported.
The larger crop comes despite a 3.5% fall in orange plantation area from 601,600 hectares to 580,570 hectares, which came about as many smaller unproductive properties switched to sugarcane production.
The state has an orange productivity of 704.78 cartons per hectare at a carton weight of 40.8kg (89.9lbs). The story reported around 86% of production went towards orange juice production, with the remainder going to the market as fresh fruit.
