Argentine govt asks growers to take steps to contain fruit flies
The Argentine government has declared a state of emergency over a plague of fruit flies in the provinces of Corrientes and Entre Ríos.
In the Official Gazette it outlined a range of measures to contain outbreaks which have occurred in Monte Caseros, Federación, Concordia and Colón.
The National Health and Food Service advised producers to collect fallen fruit on a weekly basis which must be buried under at least 30 centimeters of earth.
If this is impossible then they must be put in a strong plastic bag and taken to a suitable site for destruction.
Growers were asked to treat the ground with chemicals and spray crops with insecticides as well as plant bait for the flies.
If they fail to do this then the government will take the necessary action but leave the producers to pick up the tab.
