New peach variety launched in Brazil
The Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (EMBRAPA) has released a new sweet white-fleshed peach variety that has been bred for firmness, consistency and high productivity.
The BRS FascĂnio was developed by EMBRAPA's temperate climate research teamwith plantings in Pelotas (Rio Grande do Sul) and Jarinu (Sao Paulo), crossing the Chimarrita cultivar with Linda nectarines.
The FascĂnio plants have yields of 12-58.8kg (26.4-129.6lbs) per tree, with flesh that is greenish-white with traces of red.
However, researcher Maria do Carmo Raseira said productivity was not the most important aspect of the FascĂnio, which translates as 'Fascination' in English.
"The size of the fruit and the firmness of the flesh are the attributes that are most striking in this variety," she said.
The variety flowers and ripens later than other EMBRAPA bred peaches, such as BRS Kampai and BRS Rubimel.
