Chile's walnut exports increase in value by more than a quarter
Chile's walnut exports saw a 19% year-on-year increase to 35,616 metric tons (MT) in 2011 but returns grew at a faster rate than volumes.
Industry association Chilenut has reported a 26% rise in Chile's walnut exports to US$200.9 million.
Walnuts with shells showed the biggest year-on-year rise of 36% reaching 17,754 MT while shelled walnuts posted a more modest 6% rise reaching 8,931MT.
Turkey was the largest importer of walnuts in shells at 55% followed by the United Arab Emirates at 16% and Italy at 11%.
Brazil accounting for 28% of shelled walnut imports followed by Germany at 15% and Italy at 11%.
