U.S.: Multistate salmonella outbreak linked to pre-cut melon
Numerous pre-cut melon products have been recalled in the U.S. following an outbreak of salmonella Adelaide that has so far affected 60 people across five states.
The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) said that on June 8 Indiana-based Caito Foods recalled fresh-cut watermelon, honeydew melon, cantaloupe, and fresh-cut fruit medley products containing one of these melons.
The items were produced at the Caito Foods facility in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Recalled products were distributed to Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, North Carolina, and Ohio, and sold in clear, plastic clamshell containers at Costco, Jay C, Kroger, Payless, Owen’s, Sprouts, Trader Joe’s, Walgreens, Walmart, and Whole Foods/Amazon.
Illnesses have been recorded in Illinois (6), Indiana (11), Michigan (32), Missouri (10) and Ohio (1). Of the 60 people so far affected, 31 have been hospitalized.
The 60 illnesses occurred within the period of April 30 - May 28, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said.
The FDA is working with CDC, along with state partners in five states to trace back the pre-cut melons to identify the source to determine the products' full distribution.
