India: hailstorm batters mangoes in Karnatka

Recent rain in the Indian mango-growing state of Karnatka has led to significant crop losses for growers, the Times of India reported. 
The story reported there were around 12,000 hectares of land growing mango trees of the Alphonso variety in the Dharwad region, where farmers in general were hoping mangoes could offset earlier crop losses due to drought.
Growers were expecting a better yield this season due to alternate bearing, but hail and rain have slashed yields in many regions, including Mugad, Nigadi, Mavinkopp, Murkatti, and Salakinkopp.
The story reported there were differing views between farmers and the Indian authorities - the former said there losses were up to 70%, while the horticultural department said there was a 10-15% loss.
