France: Gilets jaunes protests result in 4,000MT of banana losses
The French gilets jaunes (yellow vests) protests that have been taking place over the last few weeks have resulted in losses of thousands of tons of bananas, according to an industry organization.
Nationwide protests over the last five weeks over economic injustice have caused widespread disruption, with many businesses closed and roads blocked.
"A loss is estimated of about 4,000 tons of bananas (or 30 million pieces of fruit) between Nov. 17 and Dec. 6," the French Union of Banana Ripeners (UFMB) was quoted as saying by Les Marchés.
The UFMB covers 38 ripening sites around the country.
