India could send record mango volume to U.S.
Indian mango exports to the U.S. could hit record volume this year despite infrastructure restrictions, according to government body Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA).
The Economic Times of India attributed the positive outlook in large part to strong demand and export quality fruit.
Volume sent to the U.S. is expected to increase from the 209 metric tons (MT) sent last year to an estimated 500MT.
The forecast is impeded, however, by inadequate irradiation centers for pest treatment.
The paper reported that India currently has only one irradiation center found in Maharashtra, with processing capacity of 10 to 15 tons a day.
Alfonso and Kesar are the two most exported varieties to the U.S., according to the publication. The ability to reach record volume, however, will depend on the turn out for the Dasheri, Langda and Chounsa varieties that come during monsoon season.
Overall exports for the year are expect to reach 83,000 MT.
