EU approves support for stonefruit growers
The European Union has approved the request by Spanish, French and Italian peach and nectarine growers for industry support amidst a crisis for the sector, according to Lainformacion.com.Â
The story reported the EU's 's Management Committee on Fresh Fruit and Vegetables said it would help to raise prices so that producers receive more money for their fruit.
Growers from the three countries met last week to discuss the crisis management measures under the EU's framework of operational programs, and concluded they were insufficient to mitigate the negative impacts of 'very low prices' for the current campaign.
The head of agriculture from Spain's autonomous community of Catalonia, Josep Maria PelegrĂ, reportedly called for the 'immediate activation' of the committee's crisis measures, arguing that the campaign was already well underway.
PelegĂ also said the Ministry of Agriculture had requested the European Commission and French Government guarantee the free movement of goods on roads amid attacks on Spanish fruit shipments on French highways over Thursday.
