Spain's largest avocado cooperative expands into Portugal

Spanish tropical fruit cooperative Trops is expanding its avocado business into Portugal, where it will soon pack and market fruit from growers farming around 1,500 hectares.

The Malaga-based organization expects this move to significantly increase its avocado volumes next season, reports Malaga Hoy [in Spanish].

Trops general manager Enrique Colilles said the cooperative has already earned the trust of 80% of the producers in Portugal, who are already Trops partners. Colilles predicts that volumes will increase by between 10,000 and 15,000 metric tons (MT).

The new facilities in Tavira will be built in two phases and each of them will occupy an area of 4,000 square meters, where the harvest will be managed and handled.

In addition to these facilities in Portugal, Trops has acquired new warehouses in Motril, southern Spain, in order to manage the avocado harvest from Granada.

Malaga Hoy reports that thanks to Trops, growers know for certain that their production will be sold at fair prices, while receiving the operational and logistical support of the organization.
