Security officer injured in attack on Philippine banana executives
Unrest continues to affect the banana industry on the island of Mindanao, where local media outlets report a group of gunmen fired at a convoy of executives from a Del Monte Fresh Philippines subsidiary.Â
Local officials told Philstar.com the chief security officer of Delinanas Development Company, reported as 'Mr. Fernandez', was wounded en route to a packhouse in the town of Datu Abdullah Sangki in the Magindanao province.
Col. Dickson Hermoso, spokesperson for the Army's 6th Infantry Division, told the publication a joint probe was underway between local police and military intelligence units.
The story reported the attackers ambushed the convoy from the side of the road with assault rifles, and were last seen fleeing toward a nearby marshland
In August, the company had its first harvest from a new project in the province, while later that month rebels from the New People's Army (NPA) launched some of the "most brazen" raids in months on plantations about 300 miles north of the most recent attack.
