U.S.: Sunkist launches organic California lime program

California's oldest citrus cooperative is squeezing limited volumes of local organic limes into its portfolio, and sees "a lot of promise" as consumer demand grows for the organic category. Sunkist limes 20150619_075559 - panorama

Sunkist Growers advertising and public relations manager Joan Wickham said the Persian limes were grown in the Coachella Valley and started shipping last week.

"Sunkist just began shipping organic, California-grown limes but peak supplies will be available during the late fall and winter months," she told www.freshfruitportal.com.

"Volume is currently limited as production just began but will increase during peak season and in years to come as the trees mature," she said, adding the team was evaluating demand for the product both domestically and abroad.

"California-grown organic limes are an offering that we think will be attractive to customers as part of our broader lime program, which also includes sourcing from Mexican producers. We do not see this program as competing, but rather complementing our overall lime program."

She said the company was always looking to meet growing demand for premium fresh citrus and respond to evolving consumer needs.
