Mango import volumes into the U.S. in early december were more than double what they were the same time last year, with Ecuador and Peru both responsible for the significant increase. 

Shipping volumes on week ending Dec. 12 was approximately 1,487,289 boxes, according to the National Mango Board.

This figure puts it 130% higher than the 646,760 boxes shipped during the same week in 2014.

The Ecuadorian season began in October and will run until January, with a projection of approximately 7.5 million boxes.

The country's main varieties are Tommy Atkins (65%), Kent (18%), and Ataulfo (15%).

Volume shipped from the South American country during the week ending Dec. 12 was 1,223,217, while the same week last year saw 635,936 boxes shipped.

Looking at Ecuador's southern neighbor, Peru, the season began in November and will run until April, with a projection of approximately 10.5 million boxes.

Peru's main varieties are Kent (95%) and Haden ( 5%).

Volume shipped from Peru during the week in question was approximately 264,072 boxes, against just 10,824 boxes in 2014.
