Mexican authorities to release sterilized fruit flies

In an effort to combat fruit flies in the Tamaulipas state, a citrus producing region of Mexico, authorities will release sterile flies starting on October 15, local daily Hoy Tamaulipas reported.

Coordinating the action is the federal government’s agriculture sanitation and quality service (SENASICA), which will release 25 million flies to start and follow with 10 million more on a weekly basis.

The effort is the latest in a push to receive a “fruit fly-free” certification for growers located in the area.

The release coincides with the beginning of the harvest of citrus varieties destined for the United States.
