Latest round of EU-Ecuador FTA talks end without agreement

The latest round of talks between delegations of the European Union (EU) and the Ecuadorian government on a free-trade agreement (FTA) ended Thursday without a final agreement, Ecuadorian paper El Comercio reported.

The talks started on Monday as the delegations started discussing technical and legal details of a final draft. Talks were suspended in 2009 after a series of differences arose, above all over intellectual property rights.

An ongoing dispute about tariffs on Ecuador’s bananas has kept the fruit out of the EU for years. In December 2009, the parties agreed to drop tariffs to 148 euros per metric ton from 176 euros.

According to the report, no date has been set for officials to return the discussion table.
