Spanish berry producer Grupo Planasa has opened a subsidiary in the fruit-producing region of Michoacán, Mexico, the company said in a statement.

The company will be called Planamerica and will a have 40-hectare plot of land to be used mostly for strawberry varieties such as Sabrina and Cristal, as well as raspberries. The company believes the opportunity in Mexico to grow berries is improving. Research and development are also goals for the new company.

“Through Planamerica we will bring our know-how to Mexico, developing varieties for Mexican growers that have been adapted specifically for the climate in this region, thus improving productivity and the quality of the harvest,” Planasa General Manager Alexandre P. Darbonne said in the release.

The company is also considering expanding its product portfolio in Mexico, and could add crops such as garlic, asparagus or fruit trees.

Outside its central office in the Navarre region of Spain, the company now has growing operations in France, Italy, Poland, the United States and Mexico.
