Peruvian artichoke exports continue to decline due to economic crisis
Slow economic times in the United States, Spain and France have kept Peruvian exports of artichokes down to US$ 33.7 million from January to September 2010, 17% less than last year, the country’s exporters association ADEX said in a statement.
Sales to the three markets, which together account for 91% of all artichoke shipments, have sagged since 2008, when some US$48.5 million of the product was exported.
The majority of exporters are focused on the U.S., where exports totaled some US$ 20 million this year, compared to US$ 24.3 million and US$28.9 million at the same time in 2009 and 2008, respectively.
Spain is the second largest destination in sales value, receiving US$ 6.5 million while France received US$ 4.1 million this year.
