GM banana trial gains support in Australia

Australia’s Northern Territory Horticulture Association has given its support to a trial of genetically modified (GM) bananas  designed to develop a strain resistant to “Panama disease,” local news site abc.net.au reported.

Scientists from Queensland University of Technology have applied for a license to develop a new strain that would resist the Panama disease, also known as fusarium wilt. The disease nearly wiped out the territory’s banana industry in the 1990s.

According to Northern Territory Horticultural Association CEO Kate Peake, if successful, the trial could provide a safety net for the entire industry.
