Peru avocado production up 14.7% in first 9 months of 2010
Peru produced 148,900 metric tons of avocados from January to September, an increase of 14.7% over the same period in 2009, the Agriculture Ministry said, according to government new service Andina.com.pe.
Of that, 59,400 metric tons were exported, with a value of US $82.1 million. That represents a 24.5% increase over the same period in 2009, the website said.
Seventy percent of the production occurred from March to August. Production between October and December accounts for 16 percent of production, the website said. The regions of Lima, La Libertad, Ica and Junín accounted for most of the export production.
The Netherlands was the main market for Peru’s avocados, taking in 39.3% of shipments, followed by Spain with 21.8%.
