Bad weather damages New Zealand apricots
Bad weather has taken a toll of apricots from the Otago region of New Zealand, according to local newspaper The Southland Times.
The harvest, expected to reach 5,000 metric tons, has yielded only 3,000 to 3,500 MT, the paper reported.
Frost and storms in September reduced the harvest. A lack of pollination early in the season also had an effect.
One grower, Stephen Jeffrey, told the newspaper that his crop was 30% to 40% lower than last year.
The effect on exports and prices are not yet clear, the newspaper reported.
A representative of another grower, Summerfruit Orchards, said having several varieties of apricots has mitigated losses, the newspaper reported.
