Apple production in Uruguay is expected to increase 33% in 2010-11, according to preliminary government estimates reported in local newspaper El País.

The country is expected to produce 69,350 metric tons of the fruit, up from 52,226 MT from the 2009-10 season, according to figures from the statistics agency of the agriculture ministry. The bicolor, Cripps Pink, Fuji and Granny Smith varieties are pushing the increase. Red apples are expected to show little change from last season.

As for pears, a nearly 20% reduction is expected in 2010-11. Uruguay is expected to produce 15,017 MT, down from 18,702 MT from last season, according to the report. Of the estimated production, about 2,800 MT are expected to be export quality.

Uruguay’s peach season is under way, with about 7,800 MT harvested, or 36% of the expected total of 21,637 MT, the report said.

Growing regions are suffering from drought, so the estimates may change, the report said.
