Mexico's avocado production down 6% in 2010
Mexico produced nearly 1.1 million metric tons of avocado in 2010, 6% less than in 2009, according to preliminary figures from Infohass.net.
Of that, 266,396 MT were exported to the U.S. in 2010, 13.5% less than in 2009, due to bad weather early in 2010, according to the website.
For the 2010-11 season, avocado producers are expecting an uptick in production in late January to coincide with the Super Bowl in the United States, the website said.
Final results from the 2009-10 season show that 344,000 MT were produced in Michoacán, Mexico’s biggest avocado producing state, according to figures from the Association of Avocado Growers and Packers of Michoacán. Of that 270,000 MT were exported to Europe, Japan and Canada, among others.
