India: Maharashtra govt gives assurances amid produce trader strikes
Update: The strike has now been called off and markets are expected to return to normal by Friday.Â
Representatives from the state government of Maharashtra claim there will be no fruit and vegetable shortages in Mumbai despite an indefinite strike from traders, website Indianexpress.com reported.
The strike was called by traders and commission agents in protest against recent changes in the Agricultural Produce Marketing Committee Act, the story reported.
The changes would allow farmers to sell their fruits and vegetables directly to retailers and consumers.
The news site reported sufficient volumes of onions, potatoes and leafy vegetables were brought to the city before the strikes.
"In Pune too, supply of vegetables is being made available as usual,"Â Sunil Porwal, additional chief secretary, marketing department, was quoted as saying.
The state government said 215 of the state's 360 APMC markets were working as normal on Tuesday, the story reported.
