Innovation: Homegrown avocados with the AvoSeedo

Even the laziest of home gardeners will be able to produce their own avocado trees with just a pit and the help of new products from start-up U.S. company AvoSeedo.

Some readers will be familiar with the toothpick method for growing avocado trees at home, but AvoSeedo founder Daniel Kalliontzis may have found an easier technique that ensures the right water levels and the easy germination of the plant.

All you have to do is peel the skin from the pit and put it into a small AvoSeedo container which floats in a bowl of water that needs to be changed every two to three weeks, and once the plant has germinated it can simply be transferred into a pot with soil.

Kalliontzis says the invention has been a success since its launch. Last year he published a pitch for the idea on Kickstarter.com just for fun, and managed to raise US$60,000.

"It's fun to see something grow. And it's good for people who don't have time as they don't have to be attentive to the water level every day and they can still get a small avocado tree," says Kalliontzis, a German whose company is based in the U.S.

The product is available on AvoSeedo's website, which states it offers worldwide shipping, as well as Amazon.
