Aussie group markets pineapples as winter immune booster

While pineapples are often seen as a summer fruit, an Australian industry group aims to raise awareness about production during winter while also promoting the food's health benefits.

Whether it’s a healthy snack or a winter BBQ, Australian Pineapples said the fruit could bring an "endless summer" flavor to meals.

One innovation has also been to sell the fruit without its crown, or "topless", as a ripe and ready everyday staple in full swing for the peak season and growers reaping the benefits of favorable growin conditions.

Australian Pineapples can reveal from this season onwards foodie favourite, Martyna Angell, will be the new face of the fruit as a pineapple brand ambassador.

Angell said she was excited to join the growers of Australia on a campaign to promote year-round fruit that packs a nutritious and delicious punch.

"Pineapples are a popular and striking addition in fruit bowls across the nation and bring a summer sensation to the kitchen, meals and snacks," she said.

Once chopped, this fruit can last up to six days in the fridge when stored in an airtight container and up to six months in the freezer. Pineapples are large in size so to maximize use, Angell has developed a '7 days of Pineapple' diet:

Monday: Pineapple skewers – a great addition on the stick alongside fruit or fish

Tuesday: Pure pineapple – the perfect snack for families on the go.

Wednesday: Smoothie – blend alongside other delicious fruits for a vitamin packed drink.

Thursday: Tropical fruit salad – giving an endless summer feel all year round.

Friday: Caramelise – sweet pineapples will naturally caramelise when fried.

Saturday: Barbecued – char pineapple on a BBQ, great on its own or in a burger.

Sunday: Frozen – pop pineapple in popsicles for a fruity twist on warmer winter days.

Ben Clifton has been growing pineapples since 2007 at a farm named Valley Syndicate outside of Yeppoon in Central Queensland. He describes the winter peak season as bountiful with an abundance of fruit.

"This year we’ve experienced a wetter than average winter, fantastic weather conditions for big and beautiful winter sweet pineapples," Clifton said.

“My serving suggestion is to throw slices of pineapple on the barbie next to some steaks before stacking them together in a burger. Sweet caramelised pineapple gives your BBQ a truly Aussie twist."

The major growing regions in Australia include South East Queensland (particularly the Sunshine Coast hinterlands, Maryborough and the Wide Bay area), the Yeppoon district, and Northern Queensland, including Mareeba and Mossman.
