U.S. politicans pledge Colombia FTA support
A committee of legislators from the U.S. House of Representatives has visited Colombia to review progress for anti-drug programme Plan Colombia, including talks for a free trade agreement (FTA), reported Portafolio.com.co.
The Congress delegation included Kay Granger, Mario Diaz-Balart, Kenneth Calvert, James Moran, Silvestre Reyes, Tom Cole and Rodney Frelinghuysen, the story reported.
The move comes after the U.S. Congress decided not to renew the Andean Trade Promotion and Drug Eradication Act (ATPDEA), following an inter-party stoush which means tariffs are now applied to hundreds of Colombian products that were previously tariff-free.
While in Bogotá, U.S. Deputy Trade Representative Miriam Sapiro said the Obama Administration hoped to reach an FTA with Colombia in the 'near future', reported Larepublica.com.co.
The delegation trip also includes visits to Panama, Guatemala and Mexico.
