Peru's onion export figures grew 75% in January compared to the same period in 2010, with a total Freight On Board (FOB) value of US$2.8 million, according to statistics released by the country's Ministry of Agriculture (MINAG).

MINAG said Peru exported 12,400 metric tons (MT) during the month representing 108.8% growth on January 2010, while major markets were Colombia, the U.S. and Spain.

Peru also exported to two new markets in January - Senegal and Puerto Rico.

The nationwide contribution from different regions was very similar to January 2010 in percentage terms, with the bulk of onions coming from Arequipa (59%), followed by Lima (21%), Lambayeque (5%), Ica (4%), La Libertad (3%) and Junin (2%).

Meanwhile, the European Union (EU) has announced it has initialled the final text of its free trade agreement (FTA) with Peru and Colombia, which it hopes to put into force as soon as possible, reported Andina.com.pe.
