Dutch demand drives Peru watermelon exports
Peru's National Tax Administration Service (SUNAT) has announced the country's watermelon export values grew 107% in January and February compared to the same period in 2010, reported Agraria.pe.
Peru exported 1,700 metric tons (MT) with a value of US$517,000 during the two months, driven by increased sales to the Netherlands which accounted for 56% of sales, the story reported.
The statistics showed the U.K. and Chile were also major export destinations, purchasing US$100,000 and US$54,000 worth of watermelons respectively.
Agraria reported 89% of volumes were sold by company Rancho Bravo SAC, while the main watermelon-growing regions were Áncash, Ica, la Libertad, Lima, Loreto and Tacna.
