Peruvian golden berry exports soar
Peruvian golden berry exports nearly doubled year-on-year in the months through September, with the exotic fruit reaching a total of 35 markets.
In a release, public entity Sierra y Selva Exportadora said the value of shipments between January and September had reached US$2.4 million, representing an increase of 82% from US$1.3 million.
Golden berries go by a raft of names including physalis, aguaymanto, Cape gooseberries.
The U.S. was the main market over the period, receiving 29% of exports, followed by the Netherlands (22%), Germany (14%), Japan (11%), Canada (6%), and South Korea (4%).
Sierra y Selva Exportadora highlighted the Andean country exported the fruit in its fresh form, as well as a dried product, organic pulp, in a candy bar, and organic marmalade.
As part of the Peruvian National Berry Program, the organization has been providing technical assistance and advice to growers in nine regions - Cajamarca, Lambayeque, Huánuco, Áncash, Lima, Junín, Arequipa, Cusco and Moquegua.
Through courses, workshops and field visits, information was given to the producers regarding agronomic management and certification.
