South African water tariffs rise 10%
South Africa's Department of Water and Environmental Affairs has introduced a 10% water tariff increase, but AgriSA claims it negotiated the fee down from 50%, website Businessday.co.za reported.
AgriSA president Johannes Möller said the move had saved the farming community R100 million (US$14.75 million), welcoming the decision in comparison to initial indications, the story reported.
"Although actual cost savings will differ from scheme to scheme in light of the ceiling on tariff increases (10%) and the initially proposed dispensation, an overall annual saving of at least R100m is envisaged for the irrigation sector based on the announced tariff dispensation," Möller was quoted as saying.
