Mexico: strawberries to follow avocado success
Mexico's Secretary of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fishing and Food (SAGARPA) has forecast continued growth for avocado exports with strawberries following in their footsteps, website Radioformula.com.mx reported.
At a meeting of representatives from the agricultural industry and the American Chamber Mexico,SAGARPA chief Francisco Mayorga said avocado growth rates were high, while strawberry growth was rapid in the states of Michoacan and Jalisco, the story reported.
He said avocadoes had positioned themselves well in the U.S. market due to their characteristics and also their availability all year round, while there were still more opportunities for the fruit in Canada, Japan and the European Union, the story reported.
In contrast, Mayorga said tomatoes did not have high potential for growth in destination markets.
