Spanish and Taiwanese officials have hailed the Dominican Republic's farming success at a recent meeting of diplomatic representatives, with the country positioning itself as a 'regional agricultural power' in the Caribbean.

Spanish Embassy agricultural attaché Antonio Fernández, said the Dominican Republic had strong sales in the European Union.

"In the last four years it has tripled its sales in Spain because the fruit that's produced in the Dominican Republic is of high quality, it's healthy, and because it's economically acceptable and beneficial to both the Spanish consumer and the Dominican producer," he said.

"In many respects it's a regional power at the agricultural level. In Central America and the Caribbean, the Dominican (Republic) is emerging as a nation of greater importance."

Taiwan's ambassador to the country Isaac Tsai, said producers had gained confidence with high levels of investment from the national government, while Taiwan too had invested in technical advisory projects.
