New PLU code for the mango category
As the range of mangoes in supermarkets becomes more diverse, the classifications that surround it have branched out too.
In a release, the U.S.-based National Mango Board says a new PLU (Price Look Up) number 3488 has been approved and assigned for red mangoes size 7 and larger.
The new PLU has been approved by the International Federation for Produce Standards (IFPS) and the Produce Marketing Association (PMA).
As with other produce items, size metrics in mangoes are inverted so a size 7 is larger than an 8, for example.
From now on the PLU code 4959 denotes red mangoes sizes 8 to 10.
"As retail mango movement grows, more retailers are willing to carry a variety of sizes at the same time. As a result, the National Mango Board (NMB) received a formal request for a new PLU code from multiple retailers and mango shippers," the NMB says.
"A survey was conducted to ensure widespread retailer and industry support for this change and based on the data collected, the NMB board members voted to move forward with an application for the new PLU number."
The red classification includes Tommy, Haden, Kent, Palmer and any other red mangoes.
