Cranberries help fight urinary infections
Studies by the Centre for Phytotherapy Research (INFITO) in Spain have shown cranberries can help avoid bacteria entering the urinary tract and prevent cystritis, Europa Press reported.
INFITO president Concha Navarro said the properties of cranberries were even more effective as medicinal capsules, which were free of side effects and could be taken for long periods, the story reported.
He said cranberry consumption prevented bacteria such as E. coli from entering the epithelium of the urinary tract.
Scientists from INFITO attributed the results to cranberries' properties of proanthocyanidins, or condensed tanins, which slow down bacteria.
