Peru propels pomegranate push

Peru's pomegranate exports rose 198.6% year-on-year to US$9.8 million during the first five months of 2011, market consultant Maximixe told website Alertaecononmica.com.

The story reported a large part of the growth was driven by a 934.7% rise in exports of the fruit to the U.K., while shipments grew rapidly to other destinations including Russia (278.5%), Canada (248.2%), the Netherlands (152.6%) and the U.S. (96.5%).

Maximixe has found Peru's pomegranates sales have grown at an average annual rate of 46.1% over the last three years, while in 2005 annual exports were just US$500,000.

In terms of pomegranate markets generally, importers in the U.S. and Europe have struggled to clear inventories over the last three weeks, according to market researcher iQonsulting.
