Dole opens major new pineapple production facility in the Philippines
Dole Philippines has reportedly opened a new US$20 million pineapple production plant, which according to publication Minda News represents the firm's largest single investment.
The company's vice president and managing director Randolph Fleming said the facility could generate 1,500 jobs and process 250,000 metric tons (MT) of fruit annually.
The site opened in the South Cotabato province over the weekend, and is said to include more than 3,000 hectares of pineapple production.
Fleming was quoted as saying the new plant could double its capacity and would put the nearby town of Surallah "on the map as a major producer of pineapples.”
Dole Philippines maintains its production plant in Polomolok, South Cotabato, which established in the 1960s, according to Minda News.
The entity, which was acquired by Japan's Itochu Corp in 2013, has pineapple plantations in at least 13,000 hectares in the province through lease agreements.
Fleming also noted Dole Thailand had closed one plant to give way to this project.
