China gains access to NZ onion market
Chinese authorities this week announced the country has reached a fresh onion export deal with New Zealand, after 10 years of negotiations.
The General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ) said an agreement was signed in early 2017, paving the way for Chinese onion exports to enter into the New Zealand market.
The New Zealand government has a very strict plant quarantine system, a statement said.
AQSIQ said it had helped domestic onion exporters improve farm practices during the past few years and added it would implement tight measures to ensure quality.
China is the world's second-largest onion exporter, with its exports last year totalling US$457 million.
New Zealand last year shipped US$82 million worth of onions, making it the ninth-largest exporter.
