Mexican weather update: Heavy winds for Baja California, Sonora
Update: Today (Jan. 10, 2018) the SMN has forecast snow or slett on the San Pedro Mártir mountains in Baja California, as well as in Sonora. Cold weather is expected in central Mexico as well with temperatures below -5°C (23°F) in Baja California, Sonora, Chihuahua and Durango. Wind gusts above 70km/hr (43mi/hr) and possible dust storms are forecast for Baja California, Sonora, Chihuahua and Durango.
Update: Today (Jan. 9, 2018) the SMN extended its forecast for temperatures below 5ªC (23ªF) to mountainous parts of Sonora, which is particularly relevant for the table grape-producing state as it has seen a very low accumulation of cold hours. Strong winds above 60km/hr (37mi/hr) are expected for the Tehuantepec Isthmus and Gulf in the country's southeast, from Veracruz to Oaxaca. Heavy storms are forecast in parts ofBaja California, Oaxaca and Chiapas.
Mexico is currently experiencing one cold front after the other in the country's north and northeast, but this week freezing temperatures are being seen in more states along with heavy winds on the southern and Gulf coasts.
In its forecast for today, the National Meteorology Service (SMN) forecast temperatures between 0-5°C (23-32°F) in mountainous parts of Baja California, Sonora, Coahuila, Nuevo León, Zacatecas, Jalisco, San Luis Potosí, Aguascalientes, Guanajuato, Querétaro, Hidalgo, Veracruz, Puebla, Tlaxcala, Mexico State and Oaxaca.
In addition, the hills of Chihuahua and Durango were in for temperatures below 5°C (23°F).
The service estimated Cold Front 21 would lead to heavy winds and fog banks in the hilly zones of the country's northeast and east, while wind gusts above 80km/hr (50mi/hr) would be seen in the southern states of Oaxaca and Chiapas.
The SMN also forecast winds of above 60km/hr (37mi/hr) on the coasts of Tamaulipas and Veracruz.
"Heavy storms are forecast for localities in Veracruz and Oaxaca; rains with shower intervals in Baja California, Puebla, Chiapas, Tabasco and Quintana Roo, and scattered showers in Sonora, Hidalgo, Guerrero, Campeche and Yucatán," the service reported in today's forecast.
