U.S.: Multistate salmonella outbreak linked to sprouts
U.S. authorities are investigating a multistate outbreak of salmonella they say is linked to sprouts served at certain Jimmy John's restaurants.
The Centers for Disease Control reports that eight people have been infected with the strains of salmonella Montevideo in Illinois (2), Minnesota (1) and Wisconsin (5). No hospitalizations or deaths have been reported.
Ill people in this outbreak report eating raw sprouts on sandwiches served at Jimmy John’s restaurants in Illinois and Wisconsin, according to the CDC.
Traceback investigations are ongoing to determine where the sprouts were distributed, and to learn more about the potential route of contamination. Illnesses started on dates ranging from Dec. 20, 2017 to Jan. 3, 2018. Ill people range in age from 26 to 50,
Raw and lightly cooked sprouts are a known source of foodborne illness and outbreaks.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) advised consumers to avoid eating sprouts at Jimmy John’s restaurants in Illinois and Wisconsin.
