U.S. relaxes Chilean cherimoya import regulations
The USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) is to relax the regulations for imports of fresh Chilean cherimoya fruit.
Soon the fruit will be able to be imported via a systems approach, whereas currently it is subject to a soapy water and wax treatment to prevent the entry of the false red mite.
APHIS said it had analyzed the matter and had approved the Chilean officials' request to modify the import requirements.
Under the systems approach, all fruit cartons must display their production locations, shipments must have a phytosanitary certificate proving they comply to import requirements, and the fruit must be inspected after it is harvested.
Shipments that fail this inspection can still be imported if they receive the soapy water and wax treatment.
The final rule will come into effect on April 30, 2018.
