Peruvian organic production to grow 15% in 2010
The production of organic crops in Peru will grow 15% during 2010, local ag-news site Agraria.pe reported.
Quoting the VP of Peru's Exporter’s Association (ADEX) Carlos Lozada, the report said that there are some 50,000 small farmers that have dedicated land to organic crops for some 390,000 hectares of crops. Production is focused in Huánuco, Puno, Piura, Cusco, Loreto and Madre de Dios. The main crops are coffee, chocolate and bananas, the report added.
Peru’s congress is reviewing a bill that includes measures to promote organic growing and that is expected to be passed before the end of the year.
Lozada spoke at the Third International Convention of Organic Products, part of the Expoalimentaria 2010 food expo being held in Lima this week.
