Argentina’s Expofrut closes pear processing plant
Argentine fruit grower Expofrut closed a pear processing plant in the center of the country, taking with it 50 jobs, local website rionegro.com.ar reported.
According to sources at the company, about half of the workers at the plant agreed to relocate with in the firm, the website reported. By declining to be relocated, the workers chose to leave, according to the company, the website said.
The firm also said some workers may end up at other companies, the workers union said, according to the website.
Marcelo Portiño, secretary general of the region’s workers union, said he met with company officials and “there is a commitment to hiring several workers” in other companies, but at the same time “they will leave co-workers in the street,” according to the website.
The closure and layoffs come nearly two months after 534 workers were let go when the company ended its table grape export operations in the Rio Negro region.
