Storms hit Chile’s growing region

Growers are assessing damage to crops from rain storms that lasted through Sunday into Monday morning in Chile’s fruit growing region.

Heavy rain hit the growing region around the capital of Santiago and extended south until Pucon, some 790 KM to the south. The areas seeing the heaviest rain were near the foothills just south of Santiago and parts of the BioBio Region.

In a preliminary analysis of the damage the country’s exporters association ASOEX said that the cherry harvest of early varieties near Santiago and surrounding areas (Regions V and VI) suffered some damage. Hail reported near the city of Los Angeles to the south could also cause bruising on apples.
