Peru's exporters applaud new measures to expand water coverage
Peru’s exporters association ADEX welcomed newly unveiled plans by the government to expand access to water resources in the Ica Valley, one of the main growing regions that has faced water shortages, ADEX said in a statement.
The country’s ministry of economy and finances announced it would finance the expansion of irrigation infrastructure to some 40,000 hectares in the Ica Valley, as well as expand coverage in other surrounding areas.
ADEX welcome the announcement, but said that it is only the first step of a long list of work still to be done.
Access to water resources has been singled out as a key issue for Peru’s agricultural export industry by both local and foreign authorities. Peru’s asparagus industry, one of the largest users of water, is especially susceptible to the lack of the resource.
