Western Argentina fruit growers block roads to push for minimum prices
Fruit growers in western Argentina were expected to block roads on Jan. 12 to rally for a minimum price for fruit, according to local media.
The Federation of Fruit Growers of RÃo Negro and Neuquén issued a statement calling for a minimum price of 1.50 pesos per kilogram of fruit in storage and .75 pesos per kilogram for fruit headed to industry, according to noticiasonline.org.
Tensions among workers, growers and the government have been rising in recent days over the price of fruit and wages. Unions for fruit packers and pickers have threatened to stop work at packing houses to attain higher pay. Â The disagreements have come just as Argentina prepares to begin its pear and apple harvests.
